On Thursday, December 23, the Maharashtra assembly cleared two bills that accorded 27 per cent reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community in the rural as well as urban local bodies in Maharashtra, reports stated.

The bills converted the ordinance made by the state government previously, into legislation. This will now be put before the legislative council for its approval. However, the legislation may not come into force since the Supreme Court has stayed the ordinances made in this effect, mentioned accounts.

The Maharashtra government had promulgated two ordinances in this effect that the Supreme Court had stayed in this month’s first week. However, the state government decided to continue with the legislative procedure by moving the bills to the Lower House.

According to reports, the SC on December 6, stayed both ordinances and ordered that the state complete the empirical study. In light of this, polls on 1,533 local body seats in Maharashtra were undertaken without OBC reservation on December 21.

Polling on the remaining 567 seats, reserved under the OBC quota will be held on January 18 as open category seats. On September 23, the state promulgated an ordinance to amend two legislations to ensure up to 27 per cent reservation to OBC candidates.
