On Monday, January 11, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched the Coastal Road Tunnel boring machine at Priyadarshini Park in South Mumbai.

As per reports, Mumbai suburban’ guardian minister and state environment minister Aaditya Thackeray and BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal were also present at the event. For the next 18 months, about 100 workers will drill day and night every day to complete the tunnelling work by June 2022. Moreover, the entire coastal road is expected to get ready by mid-2023. There will be tunnels for both up towards south Mumbai and down towards Worli end.

According to sources, authorities are touted to use a slurry-based Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which is reportedly the largest of its kind in India. It will be used to create a 3.45 Km long twin undersea tunnel from Priyadarshini Park to Girgaum Chowpatty. With components of the TBM arriving a few months ago, the civic body officials were reportedly assembling the machine at the Priyadarshini Park location.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Thackeray stated, “After the success with the battle against the coronavirus, now the battle for the development of Mumbai has begun. We will definitely win this battle and for this, we will continue our tradition of bringing the best technology and science available in the world. We had already proposed the concept of Coastal Road in 2012. The idea was that this would be the only link connecting the Bandra-Worli sea link. Mumbai has a beautiful beach, however, in order to prevent Kshitij from becoming a C-link in Mumbai in the future, it was decided to build this route underground.”

Meanwhile, the boring machine, named Mavala is 12.19. meters in diameter. Moreover, it is the largest diameter TBM machine ever used in the country. In addition, the 11-meter tunnel is touted to have all the security arrangements.
