In a horrific accident on June 25, amid the heavy downpour, a compound wall of a construction site caved in along with the driveway of Llyod’s Estate. Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam on Tuesday blamed Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the same and demanded immediate suspension of its Commissioner, Ajoy Mehta.

While addressing the media, Nirupam alleged that there is a nexus between Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta and the builders. BMC is hand-in-hand with the builders in this case. He further added that an investigation should be initiated in this matter.

The officials of BMC’s Building Proposal Department should be held responsible for the same and shall be booked, said Nirupam demanding a full-fledged inquiry on BMC’s work and expenditure and asked: “where does the money go?”

We want the builder in jail. Despite many complaints before, the builders continued working and this cave-in is a proof against them," said Simran Parmar, Llyod’s Estate residence, who filed a complaint against Dosti Realty builders.

However, despite the stay orders, builders are still dumping load to fill the gap, residents claimed. Llyod's Estate spotted two more cave-ins around the garden area in ‘D’ wing of the society. Thus, the residence of both the societies are concerned for their safety and the plot of Dosti realty construction site is located between Llyod’s Estate and Dosti Blossom.

Surprisingly, as this happened, Structural Engeenier appointed by the BMC, Nitin Kamble’s audit report mentioned that the building is safe. To this, Simran Parmar said, “How can the building be safe, if we had two cave-ins today?”

Nirupam further added, Corporator Sufiyan Niyaz Vanu informed him that some of the construction workers might have died as well. They were living on the excavation site and BMC is not digging into the debris to find out. There can be dead bodies under the debris. Nirupam called this act “Criminal Negligence” from the BMC and the builders.

In the press conference, Dosti Blossom’s secretary Rajesh Kashi said that the management of their society had written a letter to BMC’s F-North office on May 15, 2017, informing the officials to inspect the site to deter any kind of damage in the future. However, there was no revert then from BMC’s side and the letters were also sent to the Municipal Commissioner. Afraid of a similar mishap with them, the residents have filed a non-cognisable offense report against the builders.
