Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Chandrakant Patil attacked the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government over the Supreme Court decision to order a stay on the implementation of the Maratha reservation in government jobs and education.
Patil said that the MVA government lacks the determination to implement the Maratha reservation. The Maratha reservation law was passed during Devendra Fadnavis’ tenure as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 2018.
Earlier, the Bombay High Court had upheld the decision of Maharashtra government to provide reservation to Maratha community. However, it struck down the 16 per cent quota saying that the number should be brought down to 12 per cent in education and 13 per cent in government jobs.
Patil accused the Uddhav Thackeray government of failing to sustain the Maratha reservation brought by the then BJP-led government. He said that the MVA couldn’t play a competent role in defending the Maratha reservation before the Supreme Court.
Speaking on bringing an ordinance in this matter, Patil said that this can’t solve the issue of stay order as many petitioners will rush to take legal resorts to challenge the Maratha reservation.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that the decision to stay the implementation of Maratha reservation by the apex court was “unexpected”. He, however, said that his government will fight for justice while urging the Maratha community to not organise protests.
The Maratha organisations in Maharashtra have become aggressive after the Supreme Court’s decision and have organised protests across the state.
