Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday asserted that the role of Pune Police and a few senior police officials in Elgar Parishad case should be investigated.

While addressing the media in Mumbai, Pawar said he used to be proud of Maharashtra police but the situation today is “worrying” and hinted that someone “leaked” the information to central government regarding an internal meeting on forming Special Investigation Team (SIT).

“I have handled the home department for nearly 15-20 years and I used to be proud of the Maharashtra police. However, the way power was misused by the police (in Elgar Parishad case) is worrying. The role of Pune police and few senior police officials in the case is questionable. They have booked people who were not even present in the event,” NCP chief Sharad Pawar said.

Pawar further asserted that the central government was informed regarding the internal meeting held by Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. The Uddhav Thackeray-led government need to take this seriously, the NCP chief added.

“Ajit Pawar and Anil Deshmukh won’t have to inform the Union Home Ministry, then who has informed them? The state government needs to take this seriously,” Pawar said.

Pawar further informed that the Supreme Court had also said that an independent probe in the Elgar Parishad case should be conducted. "I am demanding the same thing," Pawar said.

Days after Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, Sharad Pawar wrote a letter to Chief Minister and Maharashtra Home Minister demanding an SIT probe into the Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon violence case.

On January 25, the centre decided to transfer the Elgar Parishad case to NIA. This happened after Ajit Pawar and Deshmukh held a meeting on forming the SIT.

On Monday, Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister Nawab Malik announced that the state government will conduct a parallel probe into the matter.

After Maharashtra government approved the transfer of Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon violence case to National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sharad Pawar called a meeting with all NCP ministers after which Malik stated that the government has the authority to conduct a parallel probe under the section 10 of the NIA.
