After resigning as Congress MLA, Nitesh Rane on Thursday shifted his loyalties and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the assembly elections in Maharashtra which are scheduled on October 21. 

Rane, son of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane, submitted his resignation to Maharashtra legislative assembly speaker Haribhau Bagade. As per the media reports, Nitesh Rane is likely to contest the assembly elections from Kankavali constituency on a BJP ticket.

Nitesh Rane won 2014 Maharashtra assembly elections from the same seat on Congress’ ticket while defeating BJP candidate. 

Earlier on Wednesday, Narayan Rane had claimed that his son’s name will be listed in the second list of candidates which will be carried out by the BJP. However, the Nitesh’s name was missing from the list which came out on Wednesday night.

Rane said that he will merge his party – Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksha (MSP) – with the BJP in the coming week. Rane founded MSP in 2017 after parting ways with Congress. Narayan Rane is currently a Rajya Sabha MP with the help of BJP’s support.
