Amid the controversy over a book comparing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar claimed that the actual guru of the Maratha ruler was his mother Rajmata Jijabai and not Ramdas Swami.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and right-wing organisations have regarded Ramdas Swami as the guru of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

While addressing the gathering at Baramati, Pawar said that history is opposed to fiction claiming that Shivaji’s guru was his mother.

I have authentic historical sources which nowhere mentions Ramdas Swami as Chhatrapati Shivaji’s guru. His guru was his mother Rajmata Jijabai,” said Pawar.

The controversy over Chhatrapati Shivaji sparked after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jai Bhagwan Goyal authored a book – Aaj Ke Shivaji: Narendra Modi – comparing Modi and the Maratha king.

As this happened, Shiv Sena demanded a ban on the book saying that this is an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Amid this, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut also lashed out at BJP leader Udyanraje Bhosale demanding proof of his lineage that he is the descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

However, NCP leader Vilas Aghadi came in defence of the senior Shiv Sena leader and said that there is a difference between an original and an adopted heir of Shivaji Maharaj. Aghadi pointed out that Udyanraje was adopted.

This drew reactions from the BJP and other right-wing organisations as well. Manohar Bhide, a right-wing leader condemned Raut’s remarks and called for a bandh on Friday in Sangli district of Maharashtra.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Narayan Rane also attacked Raut for his remarks threatening to cut his tongue if he spoke anything against Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his descendants.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is our god and Sanjay Raut should not dare to speak about him and his family. His tongue will not remain intact,” Narayan Rane said.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis also reacted to Raut’s statement saying that even Mughals wouldn’t have thought of making such comments about the descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
