Maharashtra cabinet on Monday cleared a proposal which will restrict a person from availing a second house through a government scheme if the individual has already been allotted the same anywhere in Maharashtra. 

The new norm will also be applicable for individuals whose immediate family has been allotted a house under the government scheme. The decision – one family, one house – taken by the Maharashtra government will provide an opportunity to the needy to get a home through the government scheme. 

Currently, the government bars an individual from availing a house through a government scheme in the same district. However, as per the new norms, the eligibility criteria will be tightened. 

The Maharashtra housing department officials informed that this policy will restrict people from taking benefits from affordable housing scheme more than once. In order to implement the decision, the concerned departments, authorities, local bodies will take immediate action to amend relevant laws, rules and policies.

The houses through government scheme are generally provided by MHADA and CIDCO which comes under the authority of the Maharashtra government.
