Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, which are yet to be announced, the state government has increased the number of corporators to be appointed through nomination.

This decision was taken by the Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday, January 10. A cabinet note said the number of nominated representatives needed to be increased in order to improve the quality of work.

It further stated that the number of nominated councillors in the BMC will increase from five at present to ten. In other corporations and councils, it will be ten or 10 per cent of the elected representatives, whichever is less.

In an official statement, the CMO said: “To help the city administration, individuals having experience of urban governance are appointed. Such individuals can be used to make a qualitative difference to the local body activities. The decision has been taken in view of the utility of such eligible persons.”

Besides, the state cabinet also gave its in-principle approval to a proposal to increase the number of nominated councillors in all municipal corporations and councils.

The BMC Act, 1888, will be amended along with the Maharashtra Municipal Act, 1949, for this purpose.
