The Bombay High Court had acquitted all 12 accused in the 2006 Mumbai train bombings case. However, after the Maharashtra government challenged the decision, the Supreme Court stayed the acquittal. Reacting to this, Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra President and MLA Abu Azmi said, “Why fear if you’ve done no wrong?” expressing confidence that the innocence of the 12 individuals will also be upheld by the Supreme Court.

Speaking to ANI, Abu Azmi said, “These people have been in jail for 19 years. The trial court had sentenced five to death and seven to life imprisonment, while one was acquitted. The High Court later overturned the lower court’s verdict and acquitted all the accused.”

Azmi alleged that the accused were deliberately framed and no concrete evidence was found against them. Recalling the Kurla incident, he claimed, “I was a witness to what happened there. Attaur Rahman’s son was arrested in Mira Road and brought to the Kurla police station. Later, Attaur Rahman and his daughter-in-law were also summoned. The police allegedly removed the daughter-in-law’s burqa and stomped on it, and Attaur Rahman was stripped and beaten.”

He further claimed that during the assault, Rahman’s son was pressured to confess. “He told the police, ‘Write whatever you want, but leave my father and sister-in-law.’ If confessions were extracted in this manner, it’s a serious violation in a democracy,” Azmi stated.

He went on to say, “If confessions were obtained through coercion, then justice is still pending. I welcome the High Court’s decision. Even though the government has approached the Supreme Court, nothing will come of it. Why should the innocent be afraid?”

Azmi alleged that the police forced confessions from innocent people to cover up their investigative failures. “Instead of catching those actually responsible for the blasts, the police arrested the wrong people. The real culprits are still at large,” he concluded.
