In an attempt to dominate the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, the Maharashtra political party has proposed abiding by the 1995 formula for seat-sharing with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The update has sprung after the opposition has united against the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance.
As per reports, BJP President Amit Shah had called Uddhav Thackeray on February 11, Monday to discuss the seat-sharing. The reports further added that while Shah wanted to share the seats for only the Lok Sabha elections, Thackeray proposed the 1995 formula for seat-sharing, for the Assembly elections as well.
In 1995, Shiv Sena and BJP had contested 169 and 166 seats respectively. The alliance had won 138 seats and formed the government for the first time, in 1995. Accordingly, Shiv Sena has made it clear that it will claim the post of Chief Minister if the alliance comes to power. The proposal for seat-sharing for Lok Sabha is yet to be concluded but the question prior to that is: will the largest political party settle for the 1995 formula when they possess 122 MLAs?
Meanwhile, it can be seen how Shiv Sena has pushed BJP to the wall, as the latter looks desperate enough to emerge out of this situation. Alongside, it has been reported that Shiv Sena has also laid down four other conditions before BJP.
BJP might be the party in power but it has lost nine out of its 16 NDA allies in the past four years. Therefore, it would be notable to see what decision BJP reaches since it would be a drastic loss for BJP to lose an ally like Shiv Sena.
