The Chief Minister usually attends the celebration for Marathwada liberation day or ‘Marathwada Mukti Sangram Din’ which is organised every year on September 17. However, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray chose to attend the event virtually due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The members of Marathwada Vikas Mach protested against the Chief Minister for not attending the event. The pro-Marathwada group also protested against the absence of All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Imatiyaz Jaleel who is a member of Parliament from Aurangabad Lok Sabha constituency.

The Marathwada liberation day or ‘Marathwada Mukti Sangram Din’ is celebrated each year in Aurangabad on September 17 to celebrate the region’s liberation from the State of Hyderabad.

The protestors criticised Jaleel saying that he could have wished the people of his constituency on this occasion. They also accused Jaleel of being from a party which has Razakari (militia) thinking.

“AIMIM has taken contrasting stands on many national and social issues in the country. Jaleel should also answer why he remained absent during the event in previous years. The Razakars are not there today, but they are alive through people like Imtiyaz Jaleel,” PTI quoted a Shiv Sena MLC as saying.

Reacting to this, Jaleel hit out at the protestors saying his absence from the Marathwada liberation day event is being labelled as “anti-national” but the absence of Chief Minister is seen as “patriotic”.

“Why are the loyalists and the media silent? The Shiv Sena chief and Maharashtra Chief Minister has categorically refused to attend the Marathwada Mukti Sangram program,” the AIMIM leader tweeted in Marathi while being in Delhi for the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament.
