Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray paid tribute to Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray on his 100th birth anniversary, sharing a reflective message on social media that also carried a strong commentary on present-day politics.
In his post, Raj Thackeray said he was confident that Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy would remain alive not just a hundred years later, but even during his bicentenary, owing to the deep and lasting impact he had on Maharashtra’s political and social landscape. However, he added that those who remember Balasaheb today should not feel disheartened or suppressed, subtly pointing to the prevailing political atmosphere.
Raj noted that while many leaders are remembered on milestone anniversaries, very few continue to influence society and politics long after their time, a distinction he attributed to Balasaheb. He also took a swipe at contemporary political culture, stating that loyalty and principles are often compromised, and political success is increasingly judged by electoral arithmetic rather than commitment to ideology or regional identity.
Reflecting on Balasaheb Thackeray’s approach to power, Raj said that Balasaheb was never power-hungry. Instead, he found fulfilment in seeing ordinary party workers rise to positions of leadership. He asserted that governments may change, but Balasaheb’s thoughts, his image, and his fight for the Marathi language and people will continue to inspire generations.
Raj Thackeray further clarified that while political adaptability is sometimes necessary, his own decisions would never be driven by personal interest or gain, reiterating his commitment to principles over power.
