Republican Party of India (RPI) has decided to protest against Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Maharashtra on July 11. Ramdas Athawale-led RPI will protest against the rising atrocities on Dalits and Buddhists.

The protest will be held across the state outside collector offices, police stations and tehsil headquarters. This comes after reports from parts of Maharashtra highlighted the rise in a number of atrocities cases against Dalits amid the lockdown.

In a statement, the RPI said that it has decided to organise protests across Maharashtra on July 11 against the MVA government for growing atrocities against Dalits and Buddhists even during the lockdown.

The protest is being organised on the anniversary of Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar firing which happened in 1997 in Mumbai when a team of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) fired upon a crowd protesting the recent desecration of Babasaheb Ambedkar’s statue.

“July 11 is the anniversary of Ramabai Nagar firing where police had opened fire on protestors who were protesting against defacing of Babasaheb Ambedkar statue in their locality,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Matunga Police registered an FIR in connection with the vandalism at Rajgruha. On Tuesday evening, unidentified men vandalised the flower pots at Rajgruha which is the residence and memorial of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in Dadar’s Hindu colony.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the police to take strict action against those involved while terming the incident as “shocking”. He said that the insult of Rajgruha will not be tolerated.
