Navghar Police on Friday filed a case against former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Narendra Mehta for allegedly raping and harassing a woman corporator from Thane’s Bhayandar region.

An official from Mira-Bhayandar police station informed that the district rural police registered an FIR against two people including Mehta and Sanjay Tarkar. Narendra Mehta had left the BJP a few days ago stating that he is taking a political ‘Sanyas’.

No arrests have been made by the police as of now as the accused in the matter are absconding. The complaint was registered after a video of a city corporator went viral on social media two days ago.

In the video, the Mehta has been accused of harassment and abuse. The victim alleged that the abuse had been going on since 1999 and her family’s life was in danger.

Mehta and Tarkar have been booked under section 376 (rape) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Both the accused have also been booked under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Earlier, Narendra Mehta had resigned from the BJP citing that he is quitting politics and apologised to the leader of his party and opposition as well.

In a video, BJP MLA Narendra Mehta announced that he is leaving the party and doesn’t intend to join any other party as he is quitting politics. He said that his deeds in the past had brought a "bad name" to the BJP.

This is why I am resigning from all party posts. I am taking political sanyas (retirement) but will continue to do social work. Thanks to all those supported and followed me," said Mehta who had contested 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections from Mira-Bhayandar constituency.
