Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Prabhakar Shinde on Thursday was nominated as Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Mumbai BJP President Mangal Prabhat Lodha handed over a letter to Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar at her office informing her about the nomination of Shinde as LoP in BMC.

The party has also nominated Vinod Mishra as BJP’s ground leader in the civic body. The letter stated that the BJP should be named as the second-largest party in the BMC and Prabhakar Shinde be named the LoP in the civic body.

This indicates that BJP is ready to contest the upcoming BMC polls alone. The saffron party’s alliance with Shiv Sena ended after 2019 Maharashtra assembly elections due to conflict over the Chief Ministerial post.

Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, who is a Shiv Sena leader, informed that she has received the letter from the BJP but haven’t read it yet.

“I need to obtain a legal opinion on this and will follow the appropriate procedure,” Kishori Pednekar was quoted in The Free Press Journal.

Currently, Congress leader Ravi Raja is the LoP in the BMC and BJP’s group leader post has been vacant since Manoj Kotak became an MP in 2019.

“The BJP has become opposition after Shiv Sena formed the government with Congress and NCP. We can’t act as watchdogs for Mumbaikars anymore and therefore, the party has decided to raise its voice. A letter was given to Mayor and my name has been suggested for the LoP post in BMC,” said Prabhakar Shinde who is a corporator from Mulund.

In 2017, despite being the second-largest party in the BMC, the BJP decided to not remain in the opposition given its alliance with the Shiv Sena. Prabhakar Shinde had left Shiv Sena to join the BJP in 2017.
