BJP MP Manoj Kotak in the zero hour in Lok Sabha raised the issue of rehabilitation of the slum dwellers residing near railway lines in Mumbai, on Wednesday, March 30. He also demanded that a committee be set up to ensure the rehabilitation of people residing near the railway lines for nearly 30-35 years, so that they are not dishoused.

While addressing in the parliament, Kotak mentioned that the railway has been serving the eviction notices in the last few days, to the people residing near the railway tracks for the last 30-35 years. However, in response to the petition filed by Slum redevelopment board, the Supreme Court has directed the railways, state government and local authorities to prepare a scheme for rehabilitation of all these slum dwellers.

“As such the rehab scheme be prepared since the railway has served the eviction notice but has not made any alternate arrangement to rehabilitate the dwellers. I request the Government to set up a committee comprising the Central Government, state government, BMC, SRA, MMRDA representatives to prepare a scheme for the rehabilitation,” he added.

Today the dwellers are living under the fear of eviction and as such it is imperative that a scheme is prepared with active participation of the state government and the BMC to rehabilitate all the slum dwellers, Kotak further stated.

Earlier, the Central railways also actively participate with the State Government and the local authorities to plan for their rehabilitation of those slum dwellers residing near railway stations. However, the oppositions took a dig at CR’s drive against encroachment, calling it unfair and shocking.
