Restore Power Supply to Mumbai’s Siddharth Colony: Nirupam to CM Fadnavis

Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam today wrote a letter to Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis demanding the CM to intervene and end the inhuman treatment being meted out to the residents of Mumbai's Siddharth colony.

A tense situation has been created after the power supply to the residents of Siddharth colony was cut three days ago by Reliance power. Siddharth colony was established by Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and is inhabited by members of the Dalit community.

Alleging a caste bias by the state government and an elitist approach of Reliance power, MRCC President Sanjay Nirupam said, "We understand that there are some backlogs and arrears which is remaining to be paid but time and again the residents of Siddharth colony have cooperated with officials of Reliance power and even now they are willing to do so. This Colony houses people who come from backward class and are trying to make their ends meet on a daily basis. Rather than trying to find a solution, Reliance power has simply cut off their electricity which is inhumane"

More than ten thousand families reside in Siddharth colony which include the elderly and children. Due to the power cuts the motor pumps aren't working, because of which the residents are facing a water crisis as well.

The citizens have offered to pay the bills for the current month and have agreed to find a viable solution within the next 3 months. Rather than a solution-oriented approach, we are seeing high handedness of this Govt," added Nirupam

"The situation in Siddharth colony is tense as the anger among the Dalit community is rising and it might create a law and order problem. The Chief Minister can't be a mute spectator and expose how little he cares about minorities," Nirupam further said.

In his letter, Sanjay Nirupam also stated that if the CM and reliance failed to restore the power supply at the earliest, the Mumbai  Regional Congress Cell will launch an agitation to support the demands of the residents.
