Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Asim Azmi has protested against Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray over the issue of pollution in Mankhurd. SP provides support to the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state.

Azmi has alleged that a local SMS company has put the lives of 12 lakh residents in the area at risk. However, despite several requests to close the company - SMS Envoclean Pvt. Ltd., Aaditya Thackeray has ignored the demands, he added.

“Thousands of people are suffering from TB every day - the average age of people here is 39 years - yet BMC has offered 3 acres of land to this company. Is there no value to the lives of people living in Govandi?” Azmi tweeted in Hindi.

He further said that the Samajwadi Party supports the ruling Uddhav Thackeray government and yet it doesn’t listen. “Aaditya Thackeray doesn’t even pick up the phone of our public representatives,” Azmi claimed.

Due to SMS Envoclean, a large number of TB patients are being found in Govandi, Shivaji Nagar and M/East ward. The local residents are suffering from TB-like disease due to pollution caused by the company. The average life expectancy of the local people there has been up to 39 years.

Despite this, 3 acres of land is being provided by BMC for the expansion of this company. Azmi said that they have repeatedly demanded that the company be shut down immediately. The locals of Govandi, Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar have been protesting against this company for many days.
