In today’s, August 5, hearing on Aarey metro car shed dispute, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (MMRCL) told the Supreme Court that no tree cutting has been carried out in the Mumbai’s forest area. It clarified stating that some weeds and branches were removed.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice U.U. Lalit comprising Justices S. Ravindra Bhat and Aniruddha Bose prohibited the MMRCL from cutting any more trees in the Aarey colony.

This development came after the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of Maharashtra government submitted that no trees have been cut since 2019 and assured that none will be cut in the Aarey Colony till the next date of hearing.

Responding to this, the bench stated that in view of this stand taken by the MMRCL, there is no requirement for any interim order to be passed by the Court.

On the other hand, senior advocate Chander Uday Singh, representing the petitioners, contended before the apex court that tree cutting has been resumed in the Aarey forest region for the metro car shed project, despite the status quo orders.

The bench, however, noted that matter needs to be heard in detail. "What we will do is order the status quo, " the bench said in its order.

Moreover, the court has deferred the matter to next hearing on August 10.

The Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government of Maharashtra removed a stay on the construction of a Metro 3 car shed at Aarey Colony earlier in July 2022. It was halted on November 29, 2019 after the MVA government came to power and decided to construct the metro car shed at Kanjurmarg.
