Shiv Sena has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for staging the ‘ghantanand andolan’ or bell-ringing agitation demanding the reopening of temples in Maharashtra. An editorial published in ‘Saamana’ targeted former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying that the BJP’s protest defied the social distancing norms.

Shiv Sena further said that whether the opposition party will take responsibility if there is an increase in the coronavirus cases following the relaxation. Earlier, Fadnavis demanded the state government to reopen temples and said that people understand the importance of practising social distancing.

Reacting to this, the Sena said that BJP’s protest to demand the reopening of temples in Maharashtra defied the social distancing norms. Fadnavis should understand the situation in the state before raising such demands, the editorial read.

The Shiv Sena also raised questions over the statewide protest organised by the BJP. “Was the protest by BJP political or religious? The schools and temples have been shut wherever they were allowed to open,” it said.

Taking a dig at the Uddhav Thackeray government on the issue, Fadnavis asked the government to show at least half of the enthusiasm shown for reopening liquor shops.

“For reopening temples in Maharashtra, the government should show at least half of the enthusiasm shown while allowing liquor shops to operate. The decision-making process will speed up only when the government and its ministers pay attention,” he said.

The BJP in Maharashtra staged a statewide agitation on August 29 against the Uddhav Thackeray government demanding to reopen temples in the state. They gathered outsides temples across Maharashtra and chanted hymns demanding the state government to open temples.
