The Maharashtra government on Thursday approved 12 names for the nomination to the legislative council through the Governor’s quota. The nomination of 12 members of the legislative council will be recommended to Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari soon for his approval.

This was decided in a cabinet meeting on Thursday. The Shiv Sena, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have named four members each from their party. It is learnt that Shiv Sena has nominated Urmila Matondkar as one of the names for the legislative council.

12 seats of the legislative council have been vacant since April and June as their term expired. The Maharashtra Legislative Council has a total of 78 members out of which 12 are nominated by the governor.

The term for all 12 nominated legislative council seats by the governor ended in June. Of these 12 seats, legislators on 10 seats already retired on June 6 while the term of remaining two expired on June 15.

The proposal to nominate 12 members to the legislative council has been approved by the cabinet and each ruling party in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has given four names.

The Governor has created trouble for the MVA government over the nomination to legislative council earlier. Therefore, the Uddhav Thackeray-led government is being cautious and has not recommended the names immediately. The tussle between Governor Koshyari and MVA government is well known.

As per the provision of the Indian constitution and Article 171, the Governor can nominate 12 members to the legislative council with special knowledge or expertise in art, literature, science and social service.
