After a huge ruckus over his remarks, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday issued a clarification and said that he has not insulted the doctors. However, Raut sticks to his criticism of the World Health Organisation (WHO). He said that the COVID-19 outbreak wouldn’t have happened if they had worked effectively.

On Monday, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Maharashtra wrote a letter to Vice President Venkaiah Naidu over the “derogatory” statements made by Raut, asking him to appeal members of the Rajya Sabha to stop “mudslinging” and making such “derogatory” remarks against doctor’s community.

Labelling his remarks as “negative and derogatory”, the Thane branch of IMA also wrote to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray demanding Raut’s resignation. It said that doctors can’t work efficiently and sincerely with such comments.

Reacting to this, Raut issued a clarification saying that he can never insult doctors and other medical professionals. He said that his remarks on ‘doctors’ were aimed at the WHO’s role during the coronavirus pandemic. Raut stated that the issue was being unnecessarily politicised by some.

“I have not insulted the doctors. I can’t insult the medical professionals who have contributed amid the coronavirus pandemic. My comment was in reference to the WHO. I meant that the coronavirus outbreak wouldn’t have happened if WHO had worked efficiently,” Raut said.

Raut’s remarks during his interview with a Marathi news channel have stirred yet another controversy in Maharashtra. The Shiv Sena leader had said that he prefers taking medicine from compounders and not doctors as they don’t know much.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) withdrew their letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray after Raut clarified on the issue.  They had expressed their displeasure over his remarks.
