Eknath Khadse’s resignation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and his decision to join the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) comes as a major blow to the ‘Devendra Fadnavis’ brand in Maharashtra.

Reacting to the development, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said that there must be some big reason behind Khadse’s exit from the BJP. Khadse has given 40 years of his life to the BJP, he added.

“If in this phase of his life, Eknath Khadse is quitting BJP with tears in his eyes after serving the party for 40 years and now joining NCP, then there must be a big reason behind his decision. 'Unki kundli jamm gai hogi (his future must not have been certain)’,” Raut said.

There were speculations earlier that Khadse will be joining the Shiv Sena but his entry to the NCP was made official.

After resigning from the BJP, Khadse blamed Devendra Fadnavis for his resignation. He alleged that the former Chief Minister instructed the police to file a “false” harassment case against him. The veteran leader has been sulking ever since he was forced to resign as a minister in 2016 over corruption charges.

“Devendra Fadnavis destroyed my life. I feel sad about quitting the BJP but I have no choice. Fadnavis instructed the police to file a case against me on false allegations of harassment by a woman. I came clean on the corruption charges levelled against me,” Khadse said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray welcomed Khadse in the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government comprising of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress and advised BJP to think why its foundation stones are coming off when the party is climbing to success.
