Shiv Sena on Thursday wondered whether India was self-reliant at present or not while raising questions over the special economic package of ₹20 lakh crores to revive the economy amid the coronavirus outbreak.

In an editorial published in Shiv Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, the party wondered how ₹20 lakh crores will be raised while stating that an environment needs to be created where industrialists, trade and business sectors are encouraged to invest.

Shiv Sena taunted that India can’t afford industrialists running away on the path of new self-reliance. The political institutions like Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) need to be put in lockdown for some time, the editorial said.

“An institution like the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) which is helping the manufacturing of PPE kits is part of self-reliant India,” Shiv Sena said while adding that before Independence, not even a needle was manufactured in India but in 60 years the country has become self-reliant in science, technology, agro-business, defence, manufacturing and atomic science.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced a special economic package of ₹20 lakh crore as the nation combats the spread of the coronavirus outbreak while stating that this package will make India self-reliant.

During his address, Narendra Modi said that this package will benefit the farmers, labourers and the middle class of the country which pays taxes. The economic package is also for small-scale industries and the MSME sectors, he added.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman released the second tranche of the ₹20 lakh crore economic package with a focus on migrant workers, street vendors and farmers.

The Finance Minister announced ‘One nation, one ration card’ scheme under which the public distribution cards can be used in any ration shops irrespective of the states.

“The government will supply free food grains for migrants for the next two months. Moreover, the non-card holders under National Food Security Act or state-level cards will receive 5 kilograms of wheat and one kg channa per family,” Sitharaman said.
