Mulund - Party intrigues are at their best when elections draw near. Nowhere is this clearer than in Mulund, where the rift between Bharatiya Janata Party MP Kirit Somaiya and the party's MLA Sardar Tara Singh is growing wider by the day.

The differences were underlined when Shiv Sena candidate for the BMC elections Manoj Karia met Tara Singh, a locally popular leader, at his residene on Wednesday.

Much could be read into this meeting, but Singh, known for his witty repartees since his days in the civic body, merely responded with "I am still a BJP party worker." Karia was even more diplomatic. "This was a mere goodwill visit," he said, adding that he met Singh to take his blessings from the veteran politician.

Despite the apparent diplomacy, a warm relationship between the two politicians when the respective parties have declared war on each other in the civic polls, tells another story. Is the canny Sena politician trying to wean away BJP votes through Singh, who has been disgruntled with the party's functioning of late? Will the BJP lose its stranglehold on Mulund?

Karia isn't telling. The results of the BMC elections should speak for themselves.
