The Maharashtra state government, under the leadership of Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis, is set to roll out a new scheme aimed at providing substantial financial support to farmers. Named 'Namo Shetkari Sanman Yojana' (NSSY), this initiative seeks to bolster the income of farmers by offering an annual sum of ₹12,000, with the state government contributing an additional ₹6,000 to the ₹6,000 provided by the Central government through the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi program.

Proposal for NSSY Awaits Cabinet Approval

The proposal for the NSSY scheme is awaiting approval in the state cabinet meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Inspired by the successful PM Kisan Samman Nidhi program, which provides a minimum income support of ₹6,000 per year to farmers, the NSSY aims to extend the financial benefits to farmers in Maharashtra.

A Generous Boost to Farmer Income

Once the NSSY scheme receives the green light, farmers in Maharashtra will receive an annual sum of ₹12,000, twice the amount provided by the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi program. This increased support will significantly aid farmers in meeting their financial needs and improving their livelihoods.

Finance Minister Fadnavis Presents NSSY in State Budget

The NSSY scheme was formally announced by Maharashtra's finance minister, Devendra Fadnavis, during the presentation of the state's budget for the fiscal year 2023-24. Fadnavis emphasized that the state government would complement the ₹6,000 granted by the Central government under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi with an additional ₹6,000, resulting in a total of ₹12,000 being deposited annually into farmers' bank accounts.

Positive Impact on Maharashtra Farmers

With this NSSY scheme, Maharashtra's agricultural community can anticipate significant relief. This additional financial support will empower farmers to invest in their farming operations, purchase necessary equipment, and meet other essential expenses, thereby enhancing their overall economic stability.

Addressing Eligibility Concerns and Recovery Efforts

As the state government prepares to implement the NSSY scheme, it faces the challenge of addressing the issue of ineligible beneficiaries. Startlingly, approximately 1.33 million beneficiaries who do not meet the eligibility criteria have managed to receive benefits under the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi program. These ineligible recipients have received a staggering sum of ₹1,554 crore over the course of four years, as reported by the state agriculture department. Despite previous attempts by the department to recover these funds, desired outcomes have not been achieved.
