Strange bedfellows? BJP-Sena show off bonhomie

CST - The ostensible occasion was the inauguration of the civic Disaster Management Cell on Monday by CM Devendra Fadnavis in the presence of Shiv Sena Chief Uddhav Thackeray.

The real reason why the two got on to a common platform to espouse a common cause while burying the hatchet is not difficult to perceive. In local body elections across the state, the BJP has left its major rivals behind. But the real test will be the BMC elections, where the BJP and the Shiv Sena are still in a state of uneasy truce.

The two, who generally trade insults on public platforms, came together to laud the effort of launching the disaster management cell. "The cell is created on international standards," said Devendra Fadnavis. Disaster management cells will be set up in every ward. A data server room will also be constructed, all at an expense of Rs 7 crore. Present at the meeting were State Guardian Minister Subhash Desai, Yuva Sena Chief Aditya Thackeray and State Education Minister Vinod Tawde.

If the effort is to create a political bond that will not allow other political parties to take advantate of the simmering feud between them, the ruse appears to be working.
