After the Election Commission imposed a temporary ban on Narendra Modi biopic, the Supreme Court upheld the ban. The court has allowed the film to release only after May 19
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's biopic will have to face a postponement until May 19 after the Supreme Court refused to revoke the ban imposed by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The court said that the movie cannot be released until the elections are over.
Earlier, EC had decided to ban the release of the film as 'it would benefit a political party in the ongoing elections'. When the commission decided to stall the movie's release, the filmmakers moved to Supreme Court and called the ban, a violation of their Freedom of Speech.
According to EC, after the model code of conduct is implemented, there can be no poster or publicity material should be put on display on electronic media which can directly or indirectly benefit the candidate for electoral prospects.
The petition was scrapped by the court stating that the EC felt that the movie would benefit a specific party in the elections and therefore, it cannot be released till the elections are over.
