Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Nana Patole has slammed the charitable private hospitals which are denying treatment and admission to poor patients. Stating that it is a serious matter, Patole said that strict action should be taken against the trustees or the executive board of such hospitals.

The Maharashtra government has given clear instructions that the treatment to the poor should be provided free or at half-price amid the coronavirus pandemic, Patole said. He further pointed out that many charitable private hospitals are not admitting such patients and are charging them heavily for treatment.

Patole, who has recovered from the coronavirus, was speaking at a review meeting regarding charitable private hospitals. The meeting was held at Vidhan Bhavan in Mumbai.

Patole has directed the law & justice department, charity commissioner to submit a clear report on the violations of rules by such hospitals. The assembly speakers also asked for a report to effectively implement Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana (MJPJAY) for poor patients.

Instructions will be given to the government in the forthcoming Winter session in Nagpur to make necessary amendments in the rules for more effective implementation of the scheme, he clarified.

Under the scheme, the charitable private hospitals are required to provide free treatment to patients from families who hold White, Orange or Yellow ration card. The state-sponsored health insurance scheme is basically for the who have an annual income of less than 1.6 lakh.

However, many patients who are poor are often not admitted to the hospitals and are charged extra rates for treatment. There are a total of 435 such charitable private hospitals in Maharashtra.

Patients and their relatives do not come forward to lodge complaints against the hospitals as they are desperate to get treatment. Complaints lodged by third parties in this regard should also be taken into consideration, Patole said.
