A renewed call for unity was issued by the Shiv Sena (UBT) through an Instagram post on Saturday, setting off a fresh wave of political speculation in Maharashtra. The message, shared just days before the state’s foundation day on May 1, was seen as a symbolic outreach that urged people to stand together for the welfare of Mumbai and the Marathi community. Shiv Sainiks were described as being ready to defend Marathi pride, and the tone of the message suggested a larger political motive.

The development was interpreted by many as a hint towards a possible reconciliation between Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) and Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). With crucial civic elections due later this year, the prospect of a joint front led by the Thackeray cousins has gained significant traction. It was stated by a senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader that the post had been crafted to energise the party’s grassroots base and underline its unwavering focus on the interests of Marathi people. However, it was clarified that no alliance would be confirmed without direct communication and mutual agreement between Uddhav and Raj Thackeray.

From the MNS side, a senior leader—who preferred to remain unnamed—was quoted as saying that any conciliatory gesture by Uddhav Thackeray would be positively received. Nonetheless, it was also pointed out that political partnerships could not be decided via social media alone, and that deeper discussions would be essential before such a decision could be finalised. At present, both Uddhav and Raj Thackeray were reported to be out of the country on family holidays. According to sources, Raj is expected to return by April 29, while Uddhav’s return is slated for around May 4. Their absence has not dampened the enthusiasm and curiosity that the Instagram post has sparked.

Earlier last week, Raj Thackeray had remarked in a media interview that there were no serious disputes between him and Uddhav and that the broader goal of Maharashtra’s development should outweigh personal differences. Uddhav, during a private meeting with party workers, was reported to have responded positively, expressing readiness to set aside minor disagreements in favour of the state’s larger good. The idea of the Thackeray cousins reuniting politically has also received encouraging responses from other leaders. Supriya Sule, MP from the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), had reportedly called both leaders and described the moment as a hopeful sign for Maharashtra. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was also said to have welcomed the possibility, stating that such a collaboration could prove beneficial for the state.
