A day after Supreme Court termed the COVID-19 pandemic as a national crisis, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said on Thursday, April 29, urged the Centre to declare it as a national calamity.

He also said that Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray has been continuously requesting the Central government to declare COVID-19 as a national calamity.

On April 15, Thackeray wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to declare the COVID-19 pandemic as a natural calamity. Moreover, in the letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the CM had also sought financial assistance from the Centre as the second wave of COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc in the state.

Now, Raut has also reiterated the demand made by Maharashtra CM. He also said that the Centre needs to meet the demands made by the MVA govt about a higher supply of vaccines, medicines and injections to combat the virus. His statement came amidst the ongoing spree of allegations and counter-allegations between state and central government.

He told reporters that the ‘Maharashtra model’ of COVID-19 management should be implemented in other parts of the country. He did not elaborate on the model.

The SC on Tuesday, April 28, termed the surge in cases a “national crisis” and said it cannot remain a mute spectator.
