On Wednesday, June 29, the State Election Commission (SEC) declared elections for 271 gram panchayats on August 4, with the counting of votes slated to be held on August 5. Thus, the SEC has announced elections in 271 rural local bodies in 62 talukas.

According to reports, this is the first set of elections proclaimed by the SEC after the Supreme Court (SC) directed that it should consider conducting elections in areas where rainfall is low.

It has been reported that these elections will be conducted without the OBC quota. Now that the announcement has been made the code of conduct came has also come into force.

This development comes amidst the political crisis in Maharashtra, with Uddhav Thackeray resigning from the post of Chief Minister.

In addition to this, the SEC also extended the deadline from July 1 to July 3 for objections and recommendations on the ward-wise draft voter list published for elections to 14 municipal corporations including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). 

An objection can be lodged if a voter is allotted the wrong ward or if his/her name is not on the voter list. Ward-wise draft voter list has been published for the general elections of Brihanmumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Ulhasnagar, Vasai-Virar, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Nashik, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur Municipal Corporations.
