According to a latest circular issued by the State Election Commission on Monday, September 26, the voting for gram panchayats in Maharashtra has been rescheduled to October 16. Whereas, the counting of votes will be taken up on October 17.

Earlier, the voting was scheduled on October 13 while the counting of votes was to take place on October 14.

The voting will begin at 7.30 am and end at 5.30 pm. In the villages where Naxalites could affect the voting the polling will be concluded by 3 pm, the statement further added.

The polling will be held for the 1,166 Gram Panchayats or village-level elected governing bodies, which also include the election of sarpanches directly by voters.

Besides, the place and time of counting of votes will be decided by the concerned Tehsildar with the approval of the District Collector.

Shinde was quoted in accounts elaborating on how they are going to urge the SEC to defer the elections because the condition is not conducive in the aftermath of floods in several parts of the state

Based on accounts, the SEC had proclaimed local body elections on Friday, July 8, in accordance with which the election was set to take place on August 18 and the declaration of results on August 19. However, many Congress, BJP and NCP leaders have objected to holding elections without the OBC quota.

The SEC reportedly declared that Nagar Parishad polls will transpire in Jalgaon, Solapur, Jalna, Pune, Beed, Osmanabad, Nandurbar, Aurangabad, Amravati, Latur, Buldhana, Nashik, Dhule, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Ahmednagar. Further, four Nagar panchayat polls will happen in Pune, Ahmednagar and Solapur.

For those unversed, last year, the SC removed the OBC reservation in local body polls. It asked the Maharashtra government to abide by the tripe test. However, since the requirements remain unfulfilled, the procedure of restoring the OBC quota has been stalled.
