A pod hotel is being built by the Indian Railways on the lines of Japan. The first pod hotel in Indian Railways was set up at Mumbai Central. After that a pod hotel system was set up at CSMT. Now a pod hotel is going to be launched in Matheran, which is known as the nearest cool place for Mumbaikars. Pod Hotel is being constructed by Central Railway to provide the best tourist facilities in Matheran.
The pod hotel concept was first introduced in Japan. Japan created pods to provide a temporary place for passengers, employees to sleep and rest. So, pod hotels were constructed at Mumbai Central of Western Railway and CSMT of Central Railway. This pod hotel provides great facilities to tourists and travellers. Due to the popularity of Pod Hotel, Central Railway decided to set up a Pod Hotel in Matheran for the convenience of tourists. The online tender in this regard was drawn in September 2023. The successful bidder secured the contract for an annual sum of INR 8,19,000/-. The total duration of the agreement is 10 years with a provision for 10 percent annual increase in licence fee after completion of the first three years of the agreement. Pod Hotel is spread over a total area of 758.77 sq.m.
Matheran is famous as the nearest tourist destination for citizens of Mumbai and surrounding areas. Served by historic Neral-Matheran mini train. Neral-Matheran Mini Train Celebrating more than a century of operation, the Neral-Matheran Mini Train is one of the few mountain railways in India. Also now a pod hotel is going to be started at the scenic location of Matheran. This initiative is a part of Indian Railways' new innovative 'Non Fare Revenue Income Scheme' (NINFRIS), which aims to provide enhanced comfort, affordable and cost-effective accommodation options for tourists visiting Matheran.
Pod hotels in Matheran will have single pods, double pods and family pods. Due to which many accommodation options will be available to meet the various needs of the tourists. These air-conditioned pods are designed to provide maximum comfort and privacy, equipped with modern amenities like mobile charging facility, locker room service, fire alarm, intercom system, deluxe toilet and bathroom facilities. Reservation service is available for Pod Hotel and reservation service will be available through mobile app. Meanwhile, the Central Railway Administration said that the service of 'Pod Hotel' in Matheran will boost tourism with better service to tourists and provide employment opportunities.
