The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023 has surveyed Nanded as a marker for Maharashtra, revealing some concerning trends in foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) skills in children aged 14 to 18.

The survey was conducted in 28 districts across 26 states. The aim was to find data on ability, digital awareness, and skills in rural India. Nanded was chosen to represent Maharashtra for the 2023 report as its 2022 ASER report closely matched the state's average. The survey covered 1,200 households across 60 villages in Nanded.

The report indicates that 45.7% of the children struggled to read English sentences, and 22.7% could not read standard II-level literature. Furthermore, 65.6% of them could not solve simple arithmetic division tests.

In contrast to the low FLN skills, the children demonstrated proficiency in digital skills. A significant 92.3% of the children could use them effectively. 89.4% even had their own cellphones. However, the children lacked awareness about internet safety precautions when using digital devices.

While the children demonstrated digital skills, a gender gap was evident. It was reported that fewer girls had cellphones compared to boys. They were also found to be unaware of device's security features, like turning the profile private or blocking another profile.

Despite the Maharashtra government's emphasis on skill or vocational education, only 7.4% of the children were enrolled in vocational training. Interestingly, 94% of Nanded's children in this age group were enrolled in formal education. However, the percentage of out-of-school children, particularly among children between the ages of 17 and 18, was higher.

The report raises concerns about the children's arithmetic and English reading skills. Despite getting through lower classes in school, children struggled with basic tasks typically expected of younger age groups.
