On Tuesday, March 15, Dr Manisha Kayande, Member of Maharashtra Legislative Council and Shiv Sena Official Spokesperson took to Twitter to state that the state Home Minister Dilip Patil informed the assembly that the President of India has signed the Shakti Bill.

According to reports, the Maharashtra government introduced the Shakti Bill in both the Houses of the Legislature on the lines of the Direction Act with a view to protecting women. The bill was then sent to Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for approval who signed the bill. Later on Tuesday, the bill was signed by the President.

The MVA government had brought this bill in the House for the safety of women. In order to curb the atrocities against women, the law of 'Shakti', which provides for severe punishment like death for crimes like rape, will be implemented in the state.

Based on accounts, the Shakti Bill was unanimously passed by the ruling government and the opposition in the Assembly. The law will make offences like defamation of women on social media and acid attacks non-bailable. Moreover, all the cases have to be settled within a month, claim reports. This includes setting up separate investigative agencies and special courts in each district.

Kayande claims that with this, Maharashtra has become the first state to provide maximum protection to women after the Shakti Bill was enacted into law.
