Bombay Republicans SC Mumbai rose to the challenge and outshone Maharashtra State Police, Mumbai by recording a convincing 4-1 victory in the concluding Group-A league match of the 15th All India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup Hockey Tournament 2019, at the MHAL Stadium, Churchgate on Wednesday.

Later in the evening, former champions and strong contenders Indian Oil Corporation, New Delhi in emphatic fashion marched to a thumping 16-5 victory against Food Corporation of India, Pune in the final match of the group.

Indian Oil with an all-win record topped the 4-team group, while Republicans with six points from 2 wins sealed the second position and they both progressed to the semi-finals.

In Friday’s semi-finals, Indian Oil will face off against Hockey Family Badhkhalsa (HFB), Haryana at 2.15 pm followed by the second match between CAG (Comptroller & Auditor General of India), New Delhi and local challengers Bombay Republicans.

Bombay Republicans made a positive start and took the lead in the eighth minute through Darshan Gawkar. Later, Gaurav Nimbolkar scored quick goals in the 20th and 26th minutes to increase Republicans lead before Anuj Singh got the fourth to extend the lead to 4-0. Maharashtra Police scored a consolation goal in the final minute through Abhishek Patil.

Indian Oil enjoyed smooth sailing and scored at regular intervals through the efforts of Mohd Raheel Museen and Armaan Qureshi, both scoring four goals each and Talwinder Singh contributing with three goals, while V.R. Raghunath, Roshan Minz, Sunil Yadav, Gurjinder Singh and Vikramjit Singh, all chipped in a goal each to complete the rout. Food Corporation scored through a brace of goals from B.P. Somana and Suvam Khandkar and one through Harish Mutagar.

Bombay Republicans, Mumbai 4 (Gaurav Nimbolkar 2, Darshan Gawkar, Anuj Singh) beat Maharashtra State Police, Mumbai 1(Abhishek Patil).

Indian Oil Corporation, New Delhi 15 (Mohd Raheel Museen 4, Amaan Qureshi 4, Talwinder Singh 3, V.R. Raghunath, Roshan Minz, Sunil Yadav, Gurjinder Singh, Vikramjit Singh) Food Corporation of India 5 (B.P. Somana 2, Suvam Khandkar 2, Harish Mutagar).
