In another significant development, on December 8, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI and T20I teams going forward.

With this, Rohit will take over from Virat Kohli in the 50-over format from the three-match ODI series in South Africa. Moreover, Rohit Sharma, who is also the Mumbai Indians Skipper, was named vice-captain to Virat Kohli in Tests.

Taking it to Twitter, BCCCI wrote: “The committee also decided to name Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI and T20I teams going forward.”

Meanwhile, ICC hailed BCCI's decision to appoint Rohit as captain in the limited over format and called it the "beginning of a new era".

Virat Kohli already stepped down from captaining the T20I side after the Indian team's debacle in T20 World Cup. However, it was learned that the BCCI waited for the last 48 hours for Kohli, who has already relinquished T20 captaincy, to voluntarily step down from ODI leadership as well but he did not. Eventually, the BCCI and its national selection committee had to sack him and the former skipper was left with no option but to accept it.

Soon after the announcement, praises came in from all the spheres of the cricketing world.
