Mumbaikar Ruchi Shetty and Gargi Valekar have been chosen for Asia Rugby Under 20 Sevens Series 2017 women’s championship which will take place in China’s Hong Kong on 4 and 5 August. This competition will see the participants from Maharashtra, Delhi, Orissa and West Bengal. This competition will be played between seven countries which are China, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Uzbekistan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Indian women’s team performed well at a recently held Paris World Games Rugby Sevens and was the first time they went for an international competition.

This is the first time I will be handling the captaincy post and will try my best. I started playing when I was 14 years old. I could play a good game because I had participated in the international competition. I am also thankful to Naseer Hussain coach who has taught us well and we see them as our idol. I am sure we will play a good game,” Ruchi Shetty, captain.

The team comprises of captain Ruchi Shetty, Gargi Valekar, Neelam Patil, Riya Bisht, Rajani Sabar, Manjula Pradhan, Kabita Kasturi, Chanda Urav, Swapna Urav, Suman Urav and Poonam Urav. Ruchi Shetty and Gargi Valekar are Mulund residents and went to school together and are going to represent India.

“I am very happy that my team got selected for Asia Rugby Under 20 Sevens Series 2017 women’s championship. Ruchi is senior to us and is very talented. She will handle the team very well,” said Gargi Valekar, player. She added that she learned a great deal from Paris World Games Rugby Sevens. She said that Indian women’s team has an advantage as players are not of same height and weight. “Though our girls are not that physically strong, they can play mind games,” added Gargi.
