Satish Sabnis Open Rapid Chess Championship starts 21 May

Chess lovers in Mumbai have reason to rejoice. The fourth edition of the Satish Sabnis Open Rapid Chess Championship commences on 21 May. Organised jointly by the Shivaji Park Gymkhana and the Satish Sabnis Foundation, the competition kicks off on 21 May at 9 am. Registrations for participation have commenced and will close on 20 May.  Those interested can also register online on www.shivajiparkgymkhana.com.

The annual event is held in memory of Satish Sabnis, who organised the International Chess Championship in the city for the first time in 1984. A national level chess player himself, Sabnis was president of the Maharashtra Chess Association and Vice President of the All India Chess Federation and manager for the Dubai – Chess Olympiad, which incidentally, was grandmaster Viswanathan Anand's first international chess tournament.

Registration fees for the  Satish Sabnis Open Rapid Chess Championship are Rs 600. The total prize money for the competition has been set at Rs. 1.51 lakh. Players between the ages of six to 60 years can participate in the tournament. The winner of the tournament will take home Rs 21,000 and the runner up will win Rs 15000.
