In order to promote green mobility, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking has finalised bids of Olectra green tech to supply 2,100 electric buses over a period of 12 months.

EVEY, a subsidiary of Olectra Green Tech, will purchase these 2100 electric buses either directly or through its special purpose vehicle. For this, BEST gave an order of INR 3,675 crores to the buses manufacturer.

EVEY Trans Private Limited (EVEY) in which Olectra has a stake, has received the Letter of Award (LoA) from BEST. In a statement, Olectra said this is the biggest letter of award in the Indian electric mobility history wherein the order is to supply 2,100 electric buses on the gross cost contract/ operational expenditure model spanning 12 years.

The order of 2,100 E-buses is being considered as one of the biggest orders ever received in India's electric mobility history. Earlier in May, the company was declared as an L1 bidder.

The Maharashtra government's EV policy aims to electrify most of the public transport.

At present, over 300 BEST buses are electric and it is projected to be 50 per cent by 2023 and 100 per cent before 2027. Maharashtra has also seen a huge jump in EV registrations.

These buses can run almost 200 km on a single charge, thus help reducing the turnaround time.

For those unversed, Olectra Greentech is already operating 40 electric buses for BEST in Mumbai. Apart from this, it also operates electric buses in various state transport undertakings such as Pune, Hyderabad, Goa, Dehradun, Surat, and Ahmedabad, Silvasa, and Nagpur.

Meanwhile, last year, Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray had expressed his intention to bring about 30 per cent electric buses to BEST in Mumbai in the next five years. Also, the use of electric vehicles would be promoted in the state to curb air pollution, he said.
