The Maharashtra government-led by Uddhav Thackeray will release the funding of INR 300 crores, in order to pay the salaries of the employees of Maharashtra State Transport Corporation (MSRTC). With this funding, the salaries of December and January will be paid off.

The Maharashtra Government has decided to provide an INR 1,000 crores financial assistance to the MSRTC, which has suffered heavy losses in the wake of lockdown due to COVID-19 crisis.

According to reports, the transport body had suffered revenue losses during the COVID-19 lockdown period, as a result, this resulted in pending salaries.

The accumulated loss of ST has gone beyond INR 5,000 crores. Considering the financial losses incurred by the corporation during the lockdown, the losses incurred by the corporation are estimated to increase by another INR 1,000 crores. Therefore, in order to increase the income, the fare will have to be increased for some time to come.

On the other hand, the MSRTC had earlier announced its decision to discontinue free transport for the employees working in essential services, which it has been giving for the past few months due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the closure of operations.

In 2020, MSRTC staff unions had claimed that two employees committed suicides at Jalgoan and Ratnagiri districts in the last two days, allegedly due to non-payment of salaries. The MSRTC is one of the biggest road transport undertakings of the county with a fleet of nearly 18,000 buses and around one lakh employees.
