On an average, as many as 328 commuters have been penalised daily for not wearing face masks while travelling on both Central and Western railways in the last 14 days after trains resumed services for general public from February 1.

According to the Western and Central Railway data, 4,618 commuters have been for travelling without face masks on Central (CR) and Western Railway (WR) between February 1 and February 14. This include, 2,558 passengers on the Western Railway and 2,060 passengers on the Central Railway.

With 1,715 people fined, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) has recorded the highest number violating this COVID-safety protocol.

Meanwhile, fines worth INR 4.5 lakh have been collected so far, out of which INR 1.21 lakh has been recovered on CR and INR 3.28 lakh recovered on WR.

At present, the average number of passengers travelling per day stands at 37 lakhs, including 17 lakhs on WR and 20 lakhs on CR. However, before COVID-19, there were 35 lakh passengers on WR and 45 lakhs on CR.

The railway officials have request passengers to follow COVID-19 protocol such as maintain social distance and wear face masks while travelling by suburban local train services.

Local train services resumed for the city’s general public on February 1 with restricted timings. Commuters are permitted to travel by train between noon and 4 pm; after 9 pm and from first local train service until 7 am.
