Maharashtra recently celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi in a simple manner, however, a large number of visitors were seen travellers to several places in Konkan areas of Maharashtra. Observing the same, Air India has announced a new set of flights from Mumbai to Sindhudurg's Chipi airport, for Ganeshotsav 2022. As per reports, the airport is not operational yet, however, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in September 2021, provided the aerodrome license to the authorities. 

Officials state that the flights will be operated daily by Alliance Air and the journey time between Mumbai and Sindhudurg will be 85 minutes. Sindhudurg airport has priced one-way tickets for August 2022, during Ganeshotsav, at INR 1890.

Officials expect that the services at Chipi airport will benefit several passengers across Maharashtra, especially during Ganesh Chaturthi every year, where lakhs of passengers travel by special trains and buses provided by the government. With the launch of air travel from Chipi airport, authorities expect the services to be successful during the 10-day festival. 

Quoting an expert, the publication reported that the operations of the airport were announced recently by the government, after the same being delayed for several years. Advance bookings have begun for the same, however, the airlines will have to adhere to the promised deadlines. 

The services will start daily from Mumbai to Sindhudurg on October 9. Reports state that this will be the first green airport, made at an investment of INR 800 crore, and is a special purpose vehicle of IRB Infrastructure Developer that was formed and mandated with the task of project development and operations. 

Meanwhile, CSMIA recently reported four-fold increase in passenger traffic during Ganeshotsav 2021. Officials stated  that this year saw a significant rise, in passenger traffic, in comparison to 15 days in 2020, i.e., between August 16 and September 1, 2020, where the airport saw only 2.5 lakh passengers.

Besides this project, the Public Works Department drafts INR 70,000cr plan to build road connecting Mumbai And Sindhudurg. Known as the the Greenfield Konkan Expressway, this project is estimated to be built  in two years and a detailed project report can be expected soon. Officials aim to finish this in the next four years and 4000 hectares of land will be needed for the same.
