The next big project that will be taken up in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, is the 126-km-long Virar-Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor with seamless connectivity between Palghar, Thane and Raigad districts. The corridor will start from Navghar in Virar to Chirner in Uran.

The Maharashtra State Road Development (MSRDC) which will be implementing the project, has received the necessary clearances and the pre-construction works have already begun.

This project will be developed in two phases, 79 km phase 1 from Navghar to Chirner near JNPT and 47 km phase 2 from Chirner to Alibaug. The rough estimate of the first phase is Rs 10000 crores.

The corridor will enable much-needed connectivity with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and beyond all the way from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Uran.

This project will connect several key highways in the city such as NH-8, Bhiwandi Bypass, NH-3, NH-4, NH-4B, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway and NH-17. Also, with the implementation of this project, the travel time between Virar and Alibaug will be cut by 50 percent. It will also help in the overall economic development of the MMR including the suggested growth centres like Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Dombivali, Panvel, Taloja and Uran.
