The ongoing agitation by the Maharashtra State Road and Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has taken an aggressive stance as all the 250 bus depots across the state are shut are today, November 10.

This comes a day after MSRTC suspended 376 employees on the 13th day of the strike.

However, in another major development amid the stand-off between striking MSRTC and the Maharashtra government, the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana has extended support to the state transport employees in the agitation.

The Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana released an official statement and President Raju Shetti said: “Our organisation has decided to show solidarity with the state transport employees. We fully support the ongoing strike in the state.”

“The indefinite strike is justified. These employees are not getting salaries on time. The successive governments over the years have ignored the employees who have rendered excellent services with dedication,” Shetti added.

Further attacking the ruling government in the state, he mentioned that irrespective of which parties are in power, they have always exploited the workers. Whether it is present Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) or the previous government of BJP, they have always promised populist state transport schemes to gain political mileage. But adequate funds were not allocated to enforce these schemes. This has resulted in MSRTC driven to financial problems.

For those unversed, the MSRTC employees have been on strike since October 27 demanding the merger of the corporation with the state government.

The transport body is one of the biggest state transport corporations in the country with a fleet of more than 16,000 buses and around 93,000 employees, including drivers and conductors.
