The labour court in Bandra on Monday, January 17, passed an order declaring the strike by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) employees as illegal.
MSRTC has been filing complaints in various labour courts in the state for nearly a month-and-a-half, alleging that the strike was illegal.
It has been termed illegal as the law requires that a notice must be served at least six weeks before staging such a strike.

However, due to this order, the action taken by the corporation against workers like suspension and termination will be deemed legal and the corporation can even take the action of deducting salaries of the staffers on strike and can even penalise them, said a MSRTC official.
The official further mentioned that the corporation is still appealing to the employees to resume work so that they will be spared from the action.
An indefinite strike by the transport body workers have entered 84th day today, January 18. Owing to this, MSRTC has suffered a loss of nearly INR 1,200 crores.
Meanwhile, around 26,500 employees have rejoined duty and bus operations had resumed partially from 215 depots. However, services of over 2,000 daily wage and 3,123 permanent workers have been terminated so far.
The workers have been on strike since October 27 demanding MSRTC’s merger with the state government, in the hope of getting benefits availed by government employees. All 250 bus depots were shut, owing to which, the general public in rural areas who are dependent on bus services are suffering.
