The strike by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) employees continues even as the last trade union linked to the ongoing stir has announced its withdrawal.

A majority of MSRTC employees did not report to work on Tuesday, December 21, which marks the 56th day of the strike. However, the transport body managed to operate nearly 3,000 buses during the day.

An MSRTC official said that out of the total 93,226 employees of the corporation, 20,935 reported to duty yesterday, December 21.

Maharashtra Rajya Kanishtha Vetanshreni ST Kamgar Sanghatana, a lesser known union, announced an end to the strike, which started in late October demanding a merger of the loss-making transport body with the state government. This is believed to have transpired post comprehensive discussions with the state transport minister and MSRTC chairman, Anil Parab.

After the Sanghatana's decision, no other trade union is now involved in the nearly two-month-old strike.

Another senior official said they were able to run more buses on Tuesday than the previous day. The MSRTC operated 2,963 buses till 6pm as compared to 2,916 buses on Monday, December 20.

Accounts claim that the said union received a written assurance on demands from Parab. On the other hand, Gujar also appealed to the employees to resume operations by Tuesday, December 21. The staffers have been on strike since October 28, with the strike intensifying on November 9 after operations at all 250 bus depots were hit.
