Leading producer of transport infrastructure and coaches, Bombardier has hit the lowest bid for manufacturing 234 new coaches meant for the Metro 4 (Wadala-Thane-Kasarvadavli) as well as its extension, Metro line 4A (Kasarvadavli-Gaimukh).

Previously, a Chinese firm named CRRC Corporation Ltd was also in the running to be one of the manufacturers, but officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) said that the company did not qualify.

MMRDA Commissioner, RA Rajeev confirmed the developments said that Bombardier has been chosen as L1 or the lowest bidder, adding that the bidding process is ongoing for the tender valued at ₹1,865 crores. The commissioner also clarified that CRRC’s bid was “non-responsive”.

Despite the interest shown by Chinese companies, the MMRDA said in June 2020 that it terminated the bids following the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bolster Indian self-reliance under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” policy.

A spokesperson for Bombardier said that Metro cars will be produced at their sites in Savli and Maneja near Vadodara, Gujarat. It is further said that the coaches will be designed at the engineering centre in Hyderabad.
